This is what dreams are made of: Rome

Much of what I know about Rome comes from the Lizzie McGuire movie. It may not shed great light on the intricate history of the city but it does give me a reason to throw a coin into the Trevi fountain. The two of us coming from Nice took a red eye bus to Rome. Where we reunited with two of our previous travel companions and a new one. After quick showers and an awesome breakfast, made by one of the girls who had been there the night before, we headed off to explore the city where Lizzie met Paolo.

The agenda for day 1 started with a walk by the Spanish Steps. Then it was onto the Trevi fountain for some Lizzie McGuire inspired photos. We began to head over to the Parthenon but were distracted by gelato #1 of day. Then it was off to the Colosseum. Built during the Flavian dynasty, the Colosseum is an old fashioned amphitheatre. Used for gladiatorial tournaments, reenactments of sea battles, and other public events, it features some of the most advanced architecture of its time. My personal favourite being the hypogeum, a series of underground tunnels and trapdoors used to make animals or people appear and disappear from these events. Although you can get inside with a tour we decided to just walk around it with gelato #2 of the day.

After grabbing a delicious dinner at Taverna del Seminario, where they offer a 5 course fixed menu for 15 euros, we wanted to find a quieter place to chill before heading back to our airbnb. Heading back to the Trevi fountain with gelato #4 of the day (#3 had been eaten with dinner) we sat on the steps beside it and watch the sun set and the people slowly disperse.

Day two in Rome had one thing on the agenda, The Vatican. Although we got a late start to our day, we were able to get in with little to no line. We wandered around Vatican city for most of our day. Unfortunately, my camera died very quickly into our visit and much of the Vatican prohibits photography so I don’t have photos from this section. After stopping to get rings and other gifts we arrived at the Airbnb. We had decided to make four kinds of pasta and have a dinner in before we all split up the next day. With stomachs full of carbs, wine, and cannolis we packed up for everyone’s next destination.
